English Springer Spaniels are a breed of gun dog from the Spaniel family (with the “springer” term referencing their use to flush out or ‘spring’ birds). Originally descending from Shropshire spaniels in the mid 1800s, they were mostly used for chasing out and retrieving game. They’re related to Welsh Springer Spaniels and English Cocker Spaniels, and were recognised as a distinct breed in the UK in 1902.

The English springer spaniel has a compact body shape, longer in size than it is tall. Its strength and stamina allow them to hunt in harsh conditions, and they have a natural love of water. They have long legs and a flat or wavy, medium-length, weather-proof outer coat, along with a dense and short undercoat.

This breed are known for being friendly and keen to please, as well as being obedient, fast learners. They are great around children and make great, affectionate family dogs. Their high intelligence combined with their alert nature also makes them extremely ideal and effective hunting companions. As they are also extremely active, with high stamina, it is important to make sure they get plenty of exercise. Similarly, as they are fairly restless, when left alone for long periods of time you may find your English springer spaniel becomes slightly destructive and may damage furniture/tear up paper etc.

English Springer Spaniels tend to be 46-56cm tall and weigh between 16-25kg.

What grooming requirements do English Springer Spaniels have/how much hair do they shed?
Grooming English Springer Spaniels is a very time consuming and regular process. They have a double coat which will need a lot of brushing, using a slicker brush, to remove any knots as well as to get rid of any dead hair, with particular attention paid to the ears, as they are infamous for how easily they get tangled.

How long do English Springer Spaniels typically live?
12-14 years old

Are English Springer Spaniels susceptible to any particular illnesses or diseases?
Due to their large, floppy ears, they can be prone to ear infections, and you should regularly clean their ear canals to ensure that bacteria and yeast cannot grow as quickly.
