Shih Tzu

Size: Small
Group: Toy
Hypoallergenic: Yes

The Shih Tzu’s name means ’Little Lion’, however this dog breed is certainly not fierce as they are bred specifically for companionship. The Shih Tzu is also called the ‘Chrysanthemum Dog’, a nickname that describes the way the hair on his face grows out in all directions and resembles a flower. They are known to carry a soft and long double coat, which may be of any colour, although a blaze of white on the forehead is commonly seen.

They are small dogs with a short muzzle and large dark eyes. Their sturdy body is longer from the withers to the tail than the distance from the withers to the ground, they have drop ears covered with long fur, and their heavily furred tail is carried curled over their backs. Perhaps the most noticeable feature is their under-bite, with the lower jaw being slightly wider than the upper.

A Shih Tzu’s temperament varies from dog to dog although the breed is generally happy, active, playful, intelligent and outgoing. The Shih Tzu tends to interact well with other dogs and with children and adults.

They are excellent watch dogs due to their alert and active nature; however they weren’t specifically bred for this purpose. If Shih Tzu’s are not disciplined at the correct age, they can become needy and cry. Training and socialising must start at a young age in order for the Shih Tzu to obey basic commands.

FAQ

How big are Shih Tzu’s?
Shih Tzu’s stand no more than 10.5 inches with an ideal weight of 4.5 to 7.3kg.

What grooming requirements do Shih Tzu’s have/how much hair do they shed?
Due to Shih Tzu’s carrying a long coat with fast growing hair, regular grooming is necessary. Often the coat is clipped short to simplify care. They do not shed to the same degree, only losing small amounts of hair when bathed or brushed. It’s the dog’s dander (shed skin cells similar to dandruff) and saliva that trigger the most allergic reactions.

How long do Shih Tzu’s typically live?
Between 10-16 years

Are Shih Tzu’s susceptible to any particular illnesses or diseases?
Shih Tzu’s are prone to allergies (food allergies, contact allergies, inhalant allergies)
